Als Beginn der Auseinandersetzungen wird oftmals der Überfall von Rebellenorganisationen auf den Militärflughafen Al-Fashir im April 2003 genannt (vgl. Khalafalla 2005: 44, vgl. Agence France Presse 2003a). Andere Berichte sehen mit der Besetzung der Stadt Gulu durch die Rebellenorgansation „Darfur Liberation Front“ im Februar 2003 bereits den Startpunkt des Konfliktes (vgl. www.rp-online.de 2009, Agence France Presse 2003b).
