2018 Reprint of Seelctions from Emerson's Essays: First Series [1841] and Second Series [1844]. Essayist, poet, and philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) was a founder of American Transcendalism, a philosophy emphasizing self-reliance, introspection and the importance of nature for the human being. He was a prescient critic of the dehumanizing tendencies of modern society, especially the then nascent industrialization, and he disseminated his thoughts through dozens of published essays and more than 1,500 public lectures across the United States. The six essays selected from Essays, First Series (1841) and Essays, Second Series (1844) offer a sampling of his views outlining his moral idealism as well as a hint of the later skepticism that colored his thought. In addition to the celebrated title essay, "Self-Reliance," the others included here are "History," "Friendship," "The Over-Soul," "The Poet," and "Experience."

Throughout his essays, Emerson is concerned with the fundamental relationship between humanity, nature, and God. As the broadest overview of his ideas, Nature calls for a renewed spiritual relationship with the universe (or rather, God and nature, two sides of the same coin for him), unchained from the past, based on personal experience and revelation. Such a relationship would allow individuals to become a "transparent eyeball," a conduit for God in nature. In "Self-Reliance," Emerson focuses on how the individual may achieve such a relationship with nature and God through self-reliance. To be self-reliant, individuals must avoid conformity and false consistency, follow their own instincts and ideas, and remain true to themselves. "Experience" explores the "lords of life," which confuse our experience of life and distract from the cultivation of our relationship with God. Emerson advises we turn to self-reliance to overcome these.

Self-Reliance is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It describes the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. Also included are the essays The Over Soul, Circles, The Poet, Experience, Nature, and Friendship. Emerson helped start the beginning of the Transcendentalist movement in America. The Transcendentalist movement flourished in New England, and proposed a revolutionarily new philosophy of life. This new philosophy drew upon old ideas of Romanticism, Unitarianism, and German Idealism. Some of these ideas pertained closely to the values of America at the time. These values included nature, individualism, and reform, and can be noted in Emerson's essays. This cloth-bound book includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket, and is limited to 100 copies.
