An unforgettable true story of friendship, loyalty and revenge, set against the unmistakable backdrop of New York City They were four boys who shared everything - the laughter and bruises of an impoverished upbringing in New York's West Side. Then one of their pranks misfired - a man nearly died and they were sent away to a reformatory school. There they suffered the worst abuse the guards could inflict on them. They were forever scarred by their experiences. Eleven years later two of them became killers for the mob. They met the ringleader of the guards who abused them - and shot him dead in front of several witnesses. No one thought they would see the outside of a prison again - but the four friends banded together once more and in one last, audacious stand brought their own vengeance to the courtroom. Sleepers was adapted into an award-winning film, featuring Hollywood stars Dustin Hoffman, Brad Pitt, Robert de Niro and Kevin Bacon. A moving and shocking coming-of-age story that is a must read for fans of the cult film, Stand by Me. Lorenzo Carcaterra was born in New York where he still lives. He was a reporter on the New York Daily News before he wrote A Safe Place. His second book, Sleepers, became a bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic.

Caroline Knox is a smart and genuinely funny poet. The poems in Sleepers Wake, Knox's third collection, are informed by a bewildering array of comic inventiveness. Various American voices call from unexpected settings: a gothic cottage, a prairie mission, a pleasure barge in Canton. She delights in switching diction levels and playing with the gap between style and content. She makes the arcane familiar. Using material from unexpected sources, including dry epistolary exchanges, even stale jokes and mathematical equations, she transforms the prosaic into a poetry that is in the words of one critic, "rich with a strange and complex music" (Tom Andrews, Poetry East). Knox reminds us that all poetic constructions are the product of human labor and are, therefore, provisional, no matter how much they might wish to capture the eternal. With an unerring but affectionate aim, she skewers our pretensions and questions our conventions.

The symposium "Sleepers, Moles, and Martyrs: Secret Identifications, Societal Integration, and the Differing Meanings of Freedom" held in Reinhausen, 2002, formed the basis of this publication. Occasioned by the social, political and mass media discourses after the bombings of New York's World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, an interdisciplinary group of scholars came together to explore the connotations and implications of the term "sleeper". The biographies of terrorist perpetrators are but one of many permutations of sleeper-like phenomena in late modern polities. Clandestine operatives of the state are sleepers, and both willing and unwilling victims of terrorism are discursively transformed from sleepers into martyrs. Starting with analyses of the discourses about sleepers in Part I-their historical antecedents, narrative employment, and semantic differentiation-Part II turns to the hidden or unspoken of aspects of the state, the challenge of fundamentalist terrorism to the modern political project and the tensions between neighbourly discourse, public display and the state. Part III juxtaposes changing depictions of Shiite martyrdom with the violence done to the term "martyr" within the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In Part IV, cultural secrets encoded in memorials and public silences in academic discourse are addressed. The different cases assembled offer comparative materials and

Just as the industrial revolution rattled the foundations of 18th- and 19th-century society, so today's high-technology revolution is sure to have an equally profound effect on people and employment in all advanced societies. But will these changes enhance or degrade the quality of life to come? This third edition of Sleepers, Wake!, now with completely updated figures, investigates the impact of past technological revolutions on the work process and labor force. Drawing on an eclectic range of sources, the book provides a provocative analysis of work and technology today and suggests a political program for getting the best, not the worst, out of our current technological revolution.
