What is a Woman?

What is a Woman? First we must ask: what is a woman? ‘The female is a female by virtue of a certain lack of qualities’. ‘This is copulation’. And she is simply what man decree; thus she is called ‘the sex’, by which is meant that she appears essentially to the male as a sexual being. For him she is sex – absolute sex, no less. She is defined and differentiated with reference to man and not he with reference to her; she is the incidental, the inessential as opposed to the essential. He is the Subject, he is the Absolute – she is the other.’ A man is in the right in being a man; it is the woman who is in the wrong. It amounts to this: just as for the ancients there was an absolute vertical with reference to which the oblique was defined, so there is an absolute human type, the masculine. Woman has ovaries, a uterus: these peculiarities imprison her in her subjectivity; circumscribe her within the limits of her own nature. It is often said that she thinks with her glands.

5 MORGEN (LIFE IS A REMIX) – Fritz Kater EN: 5 MORNINGS – Translator: Rachael McGill Editor: Union des Théâtres de l ́Europe TERRORisms is a cooperation project led by the “Union des Théâtres de l ́Europe” with the support of the “Culture” programme of the European Union. Developed in collaboration between five theatres in Stuttgart, Oslo, Belgrade, Tel Aviv and Reims, the TERRORisms project resulted in the creation of five original plays dealing with the issue of terrorism. Written over the period of 2013 through 2015, the plays by Fritz Kater in Stuttgart, Milena Marković in Belgrade, Maya Arad in Tel Aviv, Jonas Corell Petersen in Oslo and Aiat Fayez in Reims led to the organisation of a series of world premieres, production exchanges, meetings, conferences and discussions all around Europe and beyond. These five plays — the original version and their translations into English and German — are now available as an eBook, for free.

This comparison of metaphor translations in four Hausa and six Swahili bibles identifies different methods of metaphor translation. In the focus are metaphors containing entities, which are part of the biblical cultures, but not of Hausa or Swahili speaking areas versus metaphors involving terms that Hausa and Swahili speakers are familiar with. A look at metaphors from different semantic fields (human body, animals, botany, inorganic nature, material culture, social culture) investigates if certain translation methods dominate in a particular semantic field.
