Bringing together visual artists, designers, activists, and communication and humanities scholars to reflect on mobile media, this collection investigates these new forms of community and communication practices as they are emerging in Canada and around the world and asks how this new technology transfigures subjectivities. creating new forms of social behaviour and provocative aesthetic practices. The essays in The Wireless Spectrum range from discussions of the historical antecedents of wireless communication, users and the changing dynamics of public and private space, to the issues of access and local engagement. --Book Jacket.

Auction Design for the Wireless Spectrum Market

This Brief introduces the wireless spectrum market and discusses the current research for spectrum auctions. It covers the unique properties of spectrum auction, such as interference relationship, reusability, divisibility, composite effect and marginal effect, while also proposing how to build economic incentives into the network architecture and protocols in order to optimize the efficiency of wireless systems. Three scenarios for designing new auctions are demonstrated. First, a truthful double auction scheme for spectrum trading considering both the heterogeneous propagation properties of channels and spatial reuse is proposed. In the second scenario, a framework is designed to enable spectrum group secondary users with a limited budget. Finally, a flexible auction is created enabling operators to purchase the right amounts of spectrum at the right prices according to their users’ dynamic demands. Both concise and comprehensive, Auction Design for the Wireless Spectrum Market is suited for professionals and researchers working with wireless communications and networks. It is also a useful tool for advanced-level students interested in spectrum and networking issues.

America's future competitiveness and global technology leadership depend, in part, upon the availability of additional spectrum. The world is going wireless, and we must not fall behind. The resurgence of American productivity growth that started in the 1990s largely reflects investments by American companies, the public sector, and citizens in the new communications technologies that are what we know today as the Internet. The Internet, as vital infrastructure, has become central to the daily economic life of almost every American by creating unprecedented opportunities for small businesses and individual entrepreneurs. We are now beginning the next transformation in information technology: the wireless broadband revolution. This book explores and examines maximizing the wireless spectrum for economic growth in the new era of global technology leadership.

To promote economic growth and unleash the potential of wireless broadband, Pres. Obama unveiled an initiative to reform spectrum policy and improve America¿s wireless infrastructure. In June 2010, the Pres. signed a Memorandum calling for the Nat. Telecomm. and Info. Admin. (NTIA), in collaboration with the FCC, to make 500 megahertz of spectrum available for fixed and mobile wireless broadband in the next ten years. This will improve America¿s economic competitiveness, create jobs and help maintain America¿s leadership role in technological innovation. This report outlines the plans and milestones to achieve the President¿s 500 megahertz goal. Charts and tables. This is a print on demand edition of an important report.

Combines the latest trends in spectrum sharing, both from a research and a standards/regulation/experimental standpoint Written by noted professionals from academia, industry, and research labs, this unique book provides a comprehensive treatment of the principles and architectures for spectrum sharing in order to help with the existing and future spectrum crunch issues. It presents readers with the most current standardization trends, including CEPT / CEE, eLSA, CBRS, MulteFire, LTE-Unlicensed (LTE-U), LTE WLAN integration with Internet Protocol security tunnel (LWIP), and LTE/Wi-Fi aggregation (LWA), and offers substantial trials and experimental results, as well as system-level performance evaluation results. The book also includes a chapter focusing on spectrum policy reinforcement and another on the economics of spectrum sharing. Beginning with the historic form of cognitive radio, Spectrum Sharing: The Next Frontier in Wireless Networks continues with current standardized forms of spectrum sharing, and reviews all of the technical ingredients that may arise in spectrum sharing approaches. It also looks at policy and implementation aspects and ponders the future of the field. White spaces and data base-assisted spectrum sharing are discussed, as well as the licensed shared access approach and cooperative communication techniques. The book also covers reciprocity-based beam forming techniques for spectrum
