Der Sammelband präsentiert Beiträge der inzwischen dritten internationalen Tagung, die von der DFG-geförderten Forschergruppe im Institut für Slawistik der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin durchgeführt wurde. Thematisch behandelt werden Fragen der sprachlichen Säkularisierung, die aus Blickwinkeln verschiedener Disziplinen betrachtet werden: der kognitiv orientierten Semantik, Lexikographie, Pragma- und Theolinguistik, Religionssoziologie und nicht zuletzt der Kulturwissenschaft. Die jahrelange Forschung bestätigt die Schwierigkeit, den religiösen Wortschatz zu bestimmen. Die Lexikographie verwendet zum Beispiel Merkmale wie kult. (= kultisch) oder rel. (= religiös), die nahelegen, dass es sich hierbei um einen Fachwortschatz handelt. Eine solche Schlussfolgerung ist dennoch falsch. Religionsforscher gehen längst davon aus, dass dem Menschen eine angeborene Intuition von Sacrum eigen ist. In dem während der Tagung diskutierten Säkularisierungsprojekt wird von religiösen Schlüsselwörtern (der sog. Berliner Key-Words-Liste) ausgegangen, die im Online-Lexikon (www2.hu-berlin.de/sacrumprofanum/index.html) lexikographisch bearbeitet werden. Die meisten Autoren knüpfen in ihren Beiträgen an bestimmte Lemmata aus dieser Liste an, zugleich aber machen sie auf text- und diskursspezifische Mechanismen ihres Gebrauchs aufmerksam, ganz nach dem Motto der Konferenz „Semantik und Pragmatik (der Säkularisierung)“.
